About “Cross Bones Style”

Cross Bones Style was written from Chan Marshall’s experience of meeting two orphans in South Africa. Their parents, who worked in the blood diamond mines, had been killed. Though not specified in the song, one can presume they were shot, as indicated with Marshall’s hand movements resembling a gun in song’s accompanying music video. Marshall recounts the experience in a 2018 interview for The Guardian: “I had been in South Africa, Mozambique and Tanzania for two months, alone. It really dented me, that experience. Cross Bones Style is about two children I met. Their parents were killed and they lived in trees at night.
