“Crows on a Wire,” the 10th track of of Alter Bridges “The Last Hero” album, is a powerful cautionary message to anyone considering any sort of interest in public service, politics or other aspects of celebrity in particular, as those who are willing to serve in these arenas, or become celebrities in their own right, are subject to a relentless scrutiny. The scrutiny itself is driven by a power-hungry and story-hungry media, looking for anything and everything to feed the constant 24/7 cycle of news that now permeates the airwaves of cable TV, radio media and other media. Of course, this can only occur if the people support this type of “journalism” in the first place, where ratings and “the scoop” come at any cost, regardless of the harm it does to someone who it willing to pick up the mantle of leadership we so desperately need. The concept of having a “public live” and a “private life” no longer exists, as nothing is sacred anymore, least of all anything that “sells” the news. The scrutiny is not limited to the media, as it can come from anywhere, at anytime, to advance anothers agenda to promote themselves and consolidate their own prestige and power base. The irony is it precisely these very people who will help build someone in the first place to fill a role we need, and once done, they become the very targets of those who help them get to a position where they can actually enact any semblance of change that may actually be beneficial to society as a whole, all in the interests of advancing their own agendas. Enter the public arena at your own risk – for nothing is sacred.
